Kikuyu turf for sunny, hard-working lawns

Kikuyu is tough, fast-growing and made for lawns that actually get used.

It is a great choice for sunny yards with children, dogs, backyard games and regular foot traffic. With good sunlight, decent soil and consistent care, it can grow into a thick lawn that repairs everyday wear through the warmer months.

Is Kikuyu right for your yard?

Kikuyu is often a great fit for bright, active backyards because it is strong, reliable and quick to recover when growing conditions are good.

  • Your lawn receives plenty of direct sunlight
  • Children, dogs or entertaining create regular wear
  • You want turf that repairs quickly in warm weather
  • The yard is open rather than heavily shaded
  • You are happy to mow and edge regularly during strong growth
  • You want a practical family lawn that can handle everyday use

If your lawn is heavily shaded or you want a slower-growing grass, Sir Walter Buffalo may be a better fit.

Managing Kikuyu

Kikuyu is a quality, fast-growing grass—and that growth is one of its best features. It helps the lawn thicken up and recover after regular family use.

It does need you to keep on top of regular mowing and edging, especially through warm, wet weather. Mow often enough that you are only taking a little off each time, and trim the runners before they move into garden beds.

Leaving Kikuyu long and then cutting it very hard can expose pale stems and leave a scalped look. A simple, regular routine keeps it looking thick, tidy and green.

Kikuyu for dogs, children and backyard sport

For a sunny yard with plenty of activity, Kikuyu is often our first recommendation. It can recover from everyday wear when it has enough sun, water and healthy soil.

Move soccer goals, trampolines and play equipment occasionally so the same area is not always under pressure. If your dog follows exactly the same route outside, consider a small path or stepping stones.

No turf can repair properly if one small patch is constantly being torn up. Sometimes changing the layout protects the lawn better than simply replacing the damaged section.

Kikuyu loves sunny backyards

Kikuyu is at its best in a bright, sunny backyard. If your lawn gets plenty of direct sun, it can grow thick, strong and ready for everyday use.

Before ordering, take a look at the area in the morning, at lunchtime and in the afternoon. A yard can look sunny from the house but still be shaded along fences or beside the building for much of the day.

Some moving shade is fine. If the lawn is mostly shady under trees, beside tall fences or next to the house, Sir Walter Buffalo may be the better pick.

A durable lawn from winter through summer

Kikuyu is a tough, reliable warm-season grass. It will slow down in the cooler months, then come back strongly as the soil and weather warm up.

In winter it may look a little less green and repair more slowly, especially in frosty or shaded spots. That is normal. With decent care, Kikuyu is built to carry a family lawn through winter and into a strong summer season.

If you want extra winter colour or have dogs and children using the lawn every day, annual ryegrass can be added for temporary green cover while Kikuyu is less active.

Quick Kikuyu questions

Is Kikuyu good for dogs?

Yes. Its vigorous growth helps it recover from general running and play. A path or stepping stones can help if a dog uses exactly the same route every day.

Does Kikuyu grow in shade?

It prefers strong sunlight. Some moving shade is manageable, but Sir Walter Buffalo is often better where the lawn has more mixed light.

Does Kikuyu spread into garden beds?

It can. That is why regular edging is important. Strong garden edging and quick trimming keep runners where they belong.

Can I buy Kikuyu without laying?

Yes. We can supply and deliver Kikuyu for you or your landscaper to lay, or quote optional professional laying.
